BHASVIC Centenary Talk by John Wells-Thorpe

The talk took place in the College hall at BHASVIC on the 23rd October, 2013.

Although now retired, John Wells-Thorpe was for many years a leading architect and a former vice-president of the Royal Institute of British Architects before becoming president of the Commonwealth Association of Architects. His practice undertook major projects at a number of schools including both Lancing College and Dulwich College. He has many close connections with both the school and college. Not only did he attend the school from 1940 to 1945, but his son attended BHASVIC and John was a governor of the new college for some years. He is a member of Court at the University of Sussex.

John Wells-Thorpe His autobioraphy - Behind the Facade: An Architect at Large - makes for interesting reading. He has designed over £65 million worth of building projects worldwide, including award-winning commissions. He was Honorary Librarian and Vice President of the Royal Institute of British Architects before becoming President of the Commonwealth Association of Architects, and was in private practice as an architect before becoming the first chairman of South Downs Health NHS Trust. He is a member of the NHS Design Review Panel, advises the Commission for Architecture and Built Environment, and has led numerous technology transfer initiatives in Third World countries. Among his non-architectural areas of involvement, he has chaired government independent inquiries into ophthalmic surgery and into adolescent homicide, was a magistrate, and a member of the BBC Advisory Council. He was appointed OBE for services to architecture in 1995.
